Saudi Arabia is approaching a critical milestone in the regional railway project that will extend to Türkiye. Saudi Minister of Transport Saleh Al‑Jasser stated that the joint feasibility studies for the railway line planned to run through Türkiye, Jordan, and Syria are expected to be completed before the end of 2025.
Speaking to Al Arabiya, Al‑Jasser emphasized that the project is progressing through multilateral cooperation and aims to establish a strategic transportation corridor connecting Türkiye to the Middle East.
Modern Hejaz Railway on the Agenda
The project had previously been brought up by Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu. Uraloğlu stated that a new railway line, referred to as the “modern Hejaz Railway,” is planned to be constructed between Türkiye, Syria, and Jordan.
According to the plans, this line will be extended in the future to Saudi Arabia and Oman, eventually transforming into a broader regional railway network.
Strategic Logistics Corridor Objective
With the implementation of the project, the following objectives are targeted:
- Transporting cargo originating from Jordan to Türkiye via Syria
- Moving goods from Türkiye to European and Central Asian markets
- Connecting the Red Sea to the Mediterranean and Europe
This development has the potential to create an alternative multimodal logistics corridor, particularly between the Middle East and Europe.
Impact on Regional Trade and Integration
The planned railway line is expected to:
- Provide an alternative to road transportation
- Reduce transit times
- Accelerate regional trade
- Strengthen the Middle East’s integration into global supply chains
This project, which will connect Türkiye to the Middle East by rail, is not only a transportation investment but is also considered a strategic logistics initiative capable of reshaping Europe–Asia trade flows.
