The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has completed the expansion project of the container terminal at Jubail Commercial Port and officially commenced operations at the newly upgraded facility. The $532 million investment (SAR 2 billion) is considered a significant step in line with Saudi Arabia’s ambition to become a global logistics hub.

Terminal Capacity Increased to 2.4 Million TEUs

Under the concession agreement signed with Saudi Global Ports (SGP), the expansion works have increased the terminal’s annual handling capacity from 1.5 million TEUs to 2.4 million TEUs. The terminal area has reached 460,000 square metres, enabling Jubail Port to serve industrial and commercial activities in the Eastern Province more efficiently.

Large-Scale Modernisation of Infrastructure and Equipment

As part of the project, quay length was extended from 1,000 metres to 1,400 metres, while berth depth was increased from 14 metres to 18 metres. This upgrade allows the terminal to accommodate next-generation mega container vessels. The number of ship-to-shore cranes rose from six to ten, while rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes increased from 13 to 29 units. A significant proportion of the new equipment has been designed with a focus on automation and environmental efficiency.

Strong Contribution to the National Logistics Strategy

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Saleh Al-Jasser, stated that the project reflects strong cooperation with the private sector and is fully aligned with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. He emphasised that the Jubail Container Terminal would make a substantial contribution to the Kingdom’s vision of becoming a strategic logistics hub connecting three continents.

Suliman Al-Mazrou, President of Mawani, added that the expansion enhances port efficiency and competitiveness, strengthens supply chains, and supports the growth of foreign trade.

Critical Role for Regional Trade and Industry

Located close to major industrial cities in the Eastern Province, Jubail Commercial Port plays a key role in Saudi Arabia’s import and export traffic. The expanded terminal is expected to enable faster and more seamless connections between regional cargo flows—particularly petrochemical and industrial products—and global markets. With this investment, Mawani aims to further strengthen the country’s logistics infrastructure and enhance its competitiveness in global maritime trade.
