A significant step has been taken toward the digital transformation of rail transport in Italy. As part of a project led by FS Logistix, the first operational test of a “smart train” application on the Milan–Catania Bicocca route was launched on April 15, 2026.

Operated by Mercitalia Intermodal in cooperation with Mercitalia Rail, the test trains aim to evaluate digital technologies developed for rail freight transportation under real operating conditions. With this initial convoy, the objective is to validate the on‑site effectiveness of wireless communication systems between train drivers and sensors integrated into the freight wagons.

Digital Rail Management with Real‑Time Data

The system developed under the project is based on a sensor network capable of transmitting key operating parameters in real time. The main functions being tested include continuous monitoring of the braking system, control of load stability, automatic verification of train composition, and early detection of potential derailment risks. These capabilities enable faster responses to anomalies that could lead to incidents, while also allowing freight trains to be operated under a more integrated and digitally driven management model.

At the same time as the trial phase, the fleet modernization program continues. During 2025, Mercitalia Intermodal equipped 180 wagons with the WaggonTracker digital system, increasing the number of digitized wagons to approximately 700 units. This initiative aims to establish the necessary infrastructure for the large‑scale implementation of smart train capabilities.

The integration of digital technologies makes it possible to introduce predictive maintenance models, reduce downtime, and improve wagon utilization efficiency. In addition, shorter train preparation times, enhanced service reliability, and fewer emergency interventions support more effective management of operational costs.
