One of the standards that ensure order in international trade is the container. Many countries adopt container usage in line with their own standards. With the growth of global trade, container transportation has become standardized worldwide based on ISO standards. This standardization enables seamless trade between countries and companies.

Containers play a critical role in international transportation because they not only provide secure transport but also allow logistics processes to operate faster and more efficiently. Depending on the type of goods, transport methods, and other criteria, there are many container types available, enabling various transportation preferences. Container types can be listed as follows:

  • Standard Container: Commonly used for general cargo transportation.
  • High Cube Container: Preferred for transporting bulky and voluminous goods.
  • Open-Top Container (Removable Roof): The opening roof makes it easier to load cargo that is difficult to handle.
  • Open-Top Container: The top is open and can be covered with a tarpaulin if needed.
  • Open Container: A container type without a roof and side walls.
  • Flat Rack Container: Used for transporting oversized cargo such as yachts or machinery.
  • Refrigerated Container: Allows temperature control and is generally used for sensitive goods.
  • Tank Containers: Used for transporting liquids and gases inside cylindrical tanks.
  • Ventilated Containers: Equipped with ventilation systems at the top and sides, making them ideal for storing certain goods.

In addition to container types, container dimensions also vary. These dimensions are selected based on the type of cargo being transported to ensure both maximum efficiency and safe completion of trade operations. Container dimensions also vary depending on the mode of transportation. For example, shipping container dimensions differ from those used in land transportation.

Standard Container Dimensions

Standard container dimensions are among the most preferred container sizes. In Turkey and worldwide, the most commonly used container dimensions are generally around 2.40 m to 3.00 m in width and 6.0 m to 7.0 m in length. These standard dimensions are widely used in transportation processes. The production of these containers is primarily designed to suit maritime transportation. Standardization allows logistics processes to become more effective and efficient worldwide.

20-foot container dimensions are approximately 2.35 meters wide, 5.90 meters long, and 2.37 meters high. This is one of the most commonly preferred container sizes and is generally used for transporting low-volume and small quantities of goods. Although the total payload capacity is specified as 21.7 tons, it is generally recommended not to load the container to its full capacity. This standard container offers practical usage and is ideal for a wide variety of transportation needs.

Another standard size is the 40-foot container, which is essentially a longer version of the 20-foot container. It is preferred for transporting cargo that cannot fit into a 20-foot container.

Ship Cargo Container Dimensions

Ship cargo containers are generally taller and longer than other standard containers. Ships can transport nearly all types of goods, especially those that are difficult or impossible to transport by land. Therefore, ship cargo containers are often preferred for such shipments.

Compared to other container types, ship container interior dimensions are larger and taller. These containers vary in length and width and are used to transport large and heavy items such as yachts, automobiles, and vehicles. Maritime cargo transportation is very common both in Turkey and worldwide, making ship containers highly preferred. 60-foot container dimensions, which are larger than others in both length and width, may also be used depending on the cargo being transported.

How Should Cargo Dimensions Be in Container Transportation?

Container transportation is extremely common in international trade. Containers with predefined standard dimensions are selected based on the nature of the cargo and transportation requirements. Container transportation can be used across all modes of transport, especially maritime, making it a highly versatile logistics solution.

Many people ask the question, “What should cargo dimensions be in container transportation?” The first step is identifying the type of cargo. For example, if liquids or gases are to be transported, specially designed cylindrical tank containers should be preferred. If large, tall, or heavy cargo is to be transported, open-top or open containers are more suitable.

Once the correct container type has been selected, container dimensions must be determined. Cargo length and size are taken into account when choosing dimensions. In international trade, the transportation of legally permitted goods is possible, and there are suitable container dimensions for every type of cargo. These dimensions are selected according to international standards. As a result, choosing both the correct container type and appropriate size ensures a healthier and more successful transportation process.

Selecting appropriate cargo dimensions during container selection ensures proper loading before transportation and helps prevent damage to goods. This protects goods during transit as well as during customs procedures and other formalities. Therefore, the container type and size must be selected according to the dimensions and nature of the cargo.
