The strategically significant Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) Railway, a key asset in Eurasian logistics, has officially been launched at full operational capacity following a formal ceremony held in Akhalkalaki, Georgia, with the participation of high-level representatives from TĂĽrkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

The project reaching full capacity is considered a major milestone in strengthening the Middle Corridor.

A Strategic Link Between Europe and Asia

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized that the BTK railway is not only a regional project but also a strategic infrastructure initiative on a global scale.

The line provides a seamless connection between Europe and Asia, reinforcing the region’s position within global trade and logistics networks.

The project, seen as a symbol of economic and logistics cooperation among TĂĽrkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, also stands out as one of the main backbones of the Middle Corridor.

Transport Capacity Increased Fivefold

Significant infrastructure investments have substantially increased the capacity of the BTK Railway.

  • Approximately 184 kilometers of railway line in Georgia were renovated
  • 13 stations, 55 bridges, and more than 300 infrastructure elements were constructed
  • Total transport capacity increased fivefold to reach 5 million tons

This development enables the line to play a more active role not only regionally but also in international cargo flows.

Strengthening the Middle Corridor

The BTK railway is regarded as one of the most important components of the Middle Corridor extending from China to Europe.

In recent years, rising demand for alternative routes in global supply chains has further increased the importance of this line.

In particular:

  • reducing transit times between Asia and Europe
  • increasing alternative route diversity
  • balancing geopolitical risks

have made the BTK railway a strategic logistics solution.

Regional Cooperation Gains Momentum

Beyond being a transportation project, the BTK railway is considered a strong indicator of long-term cooperation among the three countries.

The regional integration process, which began with the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, has evolved into a more comprehensive logistics network with the BTK railway.

A New Era in Logistics

Now operating at full capacity, the BTK Railway aims to provide faster, more reliable, and integrated transport solutions for Eurasian trade.

With this development:

  • regional logistics volume is expected to increase
  • the Middle Corridor will be used more effectively
  • TĂĽrkiye’s role as a logistics and transit hub will be strengthened

The full-capacity launch of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway marks the beginning of a new era in Eurasian logistics.

As a key component of multimodal and alternative transport corridors gaining importance in global trade, the project stands out as a strategic step that enhances regional competitiveness.
